Traffic Avalanche: Is Blogging With RSS Really That Important?

March 7th, 2008 by admin

There is hardly any traffic source online you can’t do without and still succeed if you know how to maximize the sources you concentrate on. However, unless you have a huge budget, there are some techniques, sources and resources you’ll do well NOT to ignore.

One of such is a blog that is RSS enabled.

For those who are not really conversant with these two terms, a blog is actually a web log. It is where you enter interesting bits about your site — Well, that’s what it started out as. Now actually, it is a constantly updated web page and people do all sorts of things on it.

For your blog to really live up to its name, it needs to be updated at least thrice daily. If not, you’re simply building a regular web page with blogging tools (Hey, some folks might disagree with me — But for me that’s what makes sense).

Now, a constantly updated web page attracts search engines all other things being equal. However, you’ll be missing out on a lot of the action if you just set up a blog.

Your blog has to be RSS-enabled.

RSS means Really Simple Syndication. If we liken your blog to a newspaper, RSS is the paper boy. The article is blog. The distribution platform is RSS.

The power of blogs is that other webmasters who like your stuff can easily have your stuff on their sites. This brings you traffic from their site.

Now let me explain this further…

When you make a new post, you ping a list of sites. Pinging is simply letting certain sites know the new stuff on your blog. When that happens, the information you added is updated on their sites. Webmasters love high quality content. So with feeds from high quality blogs, they’re assured they have high value content for their visitors.

But guess what?

The author of the blog gains a lot as folks read his/her content and then click to his site, product or name squeeze page.

So, if you’re really serious about your traffic, set up an RSS-enabled blog. And, I almost forgot: You can “siteblog”, that is, run your entire site on blog software or make your entire site RSS-enabled and get all the benefits of an RSS-enabled blog.

Time To Use Really Simple Syndication Feeds

March 4th, 2008 by admin

RSS is rapidly replacing email marketing and even newsletters. Your competitor most likely is using rss feeds to present visitors with related, rich and automated content. RSS is mostly called Really Simple Syndication and serves as a way to place a feed on websites that can read RSS from a directory.RSS is an XML-based file-application with specifics tags and commands. Much like HTML (Most popular language to design web sites), this file would feed (from a directory) headlines and short descriptions into a website that has a RSS reader. And by clicking on a headline/title of a link or item will take a user to a page where the full article can be read.If you do not have an RSS feed yet, the following steps will help you create one for your web site:File to feed:

First you need to create the XML version of your feed. Not to worry, there is a wide range of resources that allow you to fill in the information of your content and it will provide you with the correct formatted file. It should include the title or headline, a short description of what the content is about and the link where it can be read. A quick search on your favourite search engine will popup many addresses where you can generate a xml file. But, I did the task for you and here are a few options you may consider:

Save and Upload the file to your web server:

Once you have uploaded the file on your web server, it will be readable by RSS news reader anywhere in the world.

Validate the file:

Fortunately, there are programs that can assist you with this process. You will just need to place your RSS file for the program to test it against wrong or missed code and tags. This way, you will be sure that your file is readable and usable.

Create a directory:

As the main purpose of an RSS feed is to broadcast it to all RSS enabled sites, you should now look for a directory where you can place your feed. There are sites that require fees for uploading xml files, but many others offer this service for free. Obviously, the first site to place an icon of your RSS feed should be your own website.

Update often:

You should update your file, ideally, once a week or every two weeks. Frequent updates and interesting topics will have people checking your feeds and visiting your website, which could lead to business. In addition, web crawlers will also visit your site more often. Start creating RSS feeds now, add strength to your marketing strategy and be ready to sell.
